An original, limited edition, hand-coloured print by John Byrne, issued under the pseudonym “Patrick”. The American Boy dates from Byrne’s celebrated early-1990s printmaking period, when he produced a small number of highly personal, allegorical works in tightly controlled editions.
The image combines a childlike figure, a stylised animal companion and an American flag motif, rendered in Byrne’s distinctive linear style and finished with hand-applied colour. As with much of his work from this period, the piece balances humour and unease, drawing on folk art, mythology and social observation. Individually numbered 2/30 and signed in pencil “Patrick”, this is a scarce example from a limited run rarely seen intact and professionally framed.
A strong, graphic work with presence, scale and unmistakable Byrne character.
