An impressive pair of large late 19th-century French patinated régule figures, signed Defer and traditionally identified as the explorers Sir Walter Raleigh and Vasco da Gama.
Standing an imposing 63cm high, each figure is finely modelled in elaborate historical costume, with richly detailed clothing, weaponry and plumed headwear. The figures retain a dark bronze-effect patination and stand upon their original turned ebonised wooden bases.
The pair were purchased together and have traditionally been identified as Sir Walter Raleigh and Vasco da Gama, two of the great figures associated with the European Age of Exploration. While we have not been able to independently confirm the identities of the individual models, the Raleigh attribution in particular is consistent with the figure’s Elizabethan costume and traditional representations of the English explorer.
Both figures bear the cast signature “Defer” to the terrace. French museum records document other historical sculptures in régule bearing the same Defer signature, including a figure of Jeanne d’Arc recorded by the French Ministry of Culture.
A striking pair of late 19th-century French decorative sculptures, particularly impressive displayed together on a console, library table or either side of a fireplace.

Condition Report
Good antique condition with surface wear, rubbing and variation to the patinated finish consistent with age. Some areas of exposed metal and general ageing are present. The original wooden bases also show expected age-related wear.
