A Measure of History: The Copper Imperial Measuring Jug Set with Funnel & Hydrometer
Every now and then, an antique comes along that tells a story far richer than its shine — a story steeped in craftsmanship, community, and the spirit of a bygone era. The Copper Imperial Measuring Jug Set with Funnel & Hydrometer, now available from Campbell’s Curiosities, is one such treasure.
From the Heart of Elie, Fife
This exquisite set of Imperial copper measuring jugs originally belonged to a small, family-run grocer’s shop in the seaside village of Elie, Fife. The shop was owned and operated by Robert Cumming, a well-known local tradesman.
In those days, whisky wasn’t always bottled and branded as it is today - it was drawn directly from the barrel. Customers would bring their own bottles or flasks, and Robert would carefully dispense whisky using these very copper jugs, ensuring each measure was precise.
The Science Behind the Spirit
Of course, whisky in the late 19th and early 20th centuries varied in strength from barrel to barrel. To determine the exact specific gravity (or strength) of each batch, Robert used a hydrometer - a slender instrument designed to measure the density of liquids.
This allowed him to calculate not only the alcohol content but also the price per measure, ensuring every customer paid fairly for the quality and potency of their dram. The accompanying funnel helped transfer the whisky cleanly and efficiently, completing this practical and beautifully made set.
A Family Heirloom Turned Collectible
After Robert Cumming’s shop was eventually sold, the copper jugs, hydrometer, and funnel were lovingly kept as family heirlooms, displayed as ornamental pieces in the family home in Elie. Their burnished surfaces and timeless patina stood as a daily reminder of the family’s heritage and of Scotland’s enduring relationship with craftsmanship and whisky.
Today, these remarkable items have been entrusted to Campbell’s Curiosities, where they are offered for sale to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate both the artistry and the history behind such pieces.
